Conan Garden is a brand new Market Garden in Marcelin Saskatchewan starting up in 2020. We will be serving the Saskatoon area and north. We are new to Market Gardening but not new to gardening. We invite, actually encourage all the comments that come our way for Ideas and preferences even best practices if you have some.
Joanne makes amazing Pickles, Jams, and Preserves. Don’t know if we will get that far in our first year as we are trying to build our house this year and that will take some of our energies away from the Market Garden.
Go to Home page and blog page to sift through all the things we propose to do this year.
Hello to all that have taken the time to visit our garden place.
A short intro to us:
I am Frank and married to Joanne. We have recently moved to Marcelin Sask. to a beautiful 40 acre acreage just East of town. The yard is landscaped and was established 100 years ago, {1919}. There is approx 25 acres of garden space at our disposal to do what we like. We obviously love all aspects of gardening and landscaping and have found our little space of heaven. We sold the house on the property and will be building a new home in this gorgeous yard. The trees are mature an offer a park like setting. But all this work must be done yet and is providing a whole new set of challenges.
About the Garden space:
We have plenty of room for a VERY large garden, Frank has been busy procuring the equipment necessary to plant, cultivate, and harvest, a large garden such as this. That’s where you people come in! We are ready to start planting in Spring of 2020. We do not need a large garden for the two of us and our family. We do however see a trend to good honest home grown vegetables and fruits, within a 60 mile range of the kitchen table. We want to share our good fortune with those that appreciate all the goodness that comes from a local garden. Maybe some of you want to rent some garden space to do your own gardening. Some of you will be happy just knowing that the food you get from us is locally grown, and cared for by people who have a passion for gardening. We will be making Jams and preserves also, remember when you got to taste Grandma’s jams and pickles, this will be the same thing.
Like any farming enterprise, there are the challenges. Weather, bugs, weeds, etc… To offset some of those challenges we had a dugout dug in fall of 2019 and hope that we will have an ample supply of water should the rains be stingy. We have bought or made various equipment to help with the weeding, planting and harvesting. We are ready to start this project and look forward to meeting the people that like us who prefer the home grown varieties rather than food brought in from afar in the grocery stores.
